Mom and DaughterThe bond between a mother and daughter is one of the strongest in life.

For Toni Revard and Rebecca Cowan, that bond is now even stronger.

Revard and Cowan now not only share a family tie, they also share an academic title - 2019 graduates of Utica Community Schools.

The mom/daughter team earned their diploma earlier this month from the UCS Adult Education program to honor a commitment to finish high school together.

"It was amazing to be on stage with my mother," Cowan said.  "She is my best friend. I look to her for everything."

Cowan said both she and her mom both left high school when they were 16 years old. They had separately taken courses toward completion, but both felt they wanted a program that ended with a diploma.

Scanning through a Metro Parent magazine, Cowan noted an advertisement for UCS Community Education.

"I showed it to her and said 'let's do this'," she said. "We ended up going back together."

Cowan and Revard also wanted to send a message to their young daughter/granddaughter Brinn, who is nearing kindergarten age.

"We want her to know that you can do anything you put your mind to," Cowan said.

The pair were recognized at the graduation ceremony by Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns.

"I know you are an inspiration to (Brinn) and each other, but I want you to know you are an inspiring story for all of us,” she said.
